From iOS/iPadOS 27.2, Apple lets developers use an alternative App Tracking Transparency prompt in the EU, with a mandatory alternative in Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Romania, plus a one-year re-prompt option.
Apple will let developers use an alternative App Tracking Transparency (ATT) system prompt in the European Union beginning with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2. The 16 September 2026 Developer News note frames the change as part of agreements with selected European competition authorities. The rules for when an app must ask for tracking permission are unchanged.
What changes in the prompt
Apple’s user privacy and data use page says the alternative prompt has modified formatting and language, and can include an optional Additional Information text button. That button can surface more detail about linking app data with other companies’ apps and sites for advertising or measurement, or sharing with a data broker. It does not change the need to win ATT permission before tracking.
Where the alternative is mandatory
Because of legal requirements, only the alternative prompt is available for apps distributed in Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Romania. Elsewhere in the EU, the alternative is an option; the original system prompt remains available outside those five markets.
Annual re-prompt in the EU
For users in the EU, developers may show the ATT system prompt again one year after the user’s previous ATT choice in that app — whether the earlier answer was allow or deny — unless the user has turned off Allow Apps to Request to Track (renamed in the EU to Allow Apps to Request to Link Your Activity Across Companies). That is a consent-recovery lever for measurement and UA teams, not a change to the tracking definition.
Operator implication
Treat this as a consent UX and localisation job, not a new tracking entitlement. Priority work: ship and QA the alternative prompt for the five mandatory markets with iOS/iPadOS 27.2; decide whether to use Additional Information copy elsewhere in the EU; and design annual re-prompt experiments only where Settings still allow requests. MMP and analytics owners should confirm their ATT status handling still matches Apple’s unchanged permission triggers.
