US DOJ announces $400 million TikTok children’s privacy settlement (21 August 2026)

Department of Justice press release of 21 August 2026 records a $400 million COPPA settlement with TikTok and ByteDance, including $100 million tied to vacating the Musical.ly decree.

On 21 August 2026 the US Department of Justice announced a $400 million settlement with TikTok, ByteDance and affiliated entities resolving litigation about compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and its regulations. Under the settlement TikTok pays $300 million immediately and an additional $100 million upon entry of an order vacating a prior consent decree against predecessor Musical.ly.

The release states the matter was handled by the Civil Division’s Enforcement and Affirmative Litigation Branch on referral from the Federal Trade Commission, in the US District Court for the Central District of California. It notes ownership, management, compliance and privacy-practice changes since the 2024 complaint, including stronger safeguards for younger users, age-related controls and parental oversight. The DOJ emphasises that claims resolved are allegations only, with no determination of liability.
